Upon successful completion of the NIOSH 582 Equivalent Course at Seattle Asbestos Test, LLC, a student will have good understanding of the following:
Basic Asbestos Knowledge
Asbestos mineralogy, types of asbestos, its physical and chemical properties, and distribution of asbestos on the earth and through the geological times.
Health effects of asbestos, and potential asbestos risk for different occupations will be addressed as well.
Current Asbestos Regulations
Different levels of regulatory bodies, such as NIOSH, EPA, and OSHA will be discussed, and quality control and proficiency programs such as AIHA Proficiency Testing Programs and NVLAP PAT will be introduced.
Asbestos Sampling
Types of air filter cassettes, types of respiratory protection, types of pumps, types of samples will all be discussed. Sampling strategies, including development of sampling strategies, pump placement, number of samples, blanks will be taught. Optimal fiber loading and means to achieve it, sampling device calibrations, including primary and secondary calibration standards, hands-on pump calibration will also be deliberated during classes.
Sampling calculations is an important part of the course, and the methodology emphasized by Seattle Asbestos Test, LLC is to make sure the student understand the basics of the formulas other than deriving the results, hence there are existing computer programs that perform the calculations.
Volume of air sampled, personal exposure limit, time weighted average, and effective filtration area will be concepts taught to the students as well.
Sample Receiving, Handling and Preparation
This section of the course will include: sample acceptance and rejection, unique sample identification, proper Chain of Custody, sample preparation techniques, and hands-on sample preparation.
Phase Contrast Microscopy
NIOSH 582 Equivalent Course at Seattle Asbestos Test will give students a good understanding of the PCM microscopes, and plenty of time to practice on it. The topics covered include: basics of phase optics, components and function of PCM, microscope alignment including Kohler illumination, phase ring centering, and light intensity adjustment, microscope calibration such as field area determination with Stage micrometer, use of Walton Beckett graticule and
HSE/NPL resolution test slide, microscope maintenance and cleaning and basic understanding of what effects resolution, magnification, and image quality
NIOSH 7400 Method - Analysis and Counting Rules
NIOSH 7400 is the essense of the NIOSH 582 course and will be streesed by Seattle Asbestos Test, LLC. The topics covered include: overview of the method, A and B counting rules, fiber counting examples: drawings and figures, procedure to count random fields, fiber counting worksheets: what should be recorded, hands-on fiber counting, and basic understanding of other fiber counting/identification methods (PLM, TEM, SEM)
Results Reporting
NIOSH 582 Equivalent Course offered by Seattle Asbestos Test, LLC will teach the student how to design and format the reports, including the required and optional items on the reports. For example, the student will understand how to report fiber concentration (f/cc), fiber density (f/mm2), blanks in relation to calculations, and limit of detection.
NIOSH 7400 Method - Quality Control and Statistics
Topics covered include: introduction to statistics, statistical calculations of the method including standard deviation and relative standard deviation, coefficient of variation and upper and lower control limits, and purpose of quality control, reference slides, recounts, and round robin programs.
