While the NIOSH 582 Equivalent Course" and the "NIOSH 7400 Enhancement Class" are both about PCM analysis, this class, Laboratory Asbestos", is about basics of PLM bulk asbestos analysis.

Topics include: setting up the microscope, particle morphology, optical crystallography under single and crossed polars, introduction to refractive indices, extinction, sign of elongation, birefringence, study of known asbestos fibers and other insulation components. At the end of the course, a sets of unknown samples will be given to the students, and be used as the practical part of the test.

Also taught with the course are: sample preparation, sample types, layering of samples, identification of colors, and description of samples.
