An Asbestos at Home

Asbestos in my home? Where's asbestos at my home? These are the questions we hear often. More and more homeowners are realizing that asbestos might be right in their residence, the place they call home. Without exaggeration, asbestos can be found in almost any kind of building material, hence in any part of your home.

The first part of this section of our website, Where's Asbestos At Home? will answer your questions.

If that's the case, am I at danger? I've just scratched a piece of popcorn from my ceiling, or my child lives on a bunker bed that right under the ceiling that have popcorn texture, or I just realized someone removed building material, or worse yet asbestos containing material from my house some time ago. Those are the most frequent remarks we hear from homeowners. Such is the case, am I in danger now?

The section Danger from at-home Asbestos will address these concerns of the homeowners.

While most of the homeowners are reluctant to take asbestos samples themselves, some insist they will. Should you, or should you not take an asbestos sample really depend on three factors: are you the owner of the house and are you currently living in the house? If yes, you can take the sample yourself. Is the material in concern friable or not? If it is, you may not want to. Friable substance such as popcorn ceiling, or sheet vinyl can contain high percentage of asbestos, and easily become airborne. It's not a good idea to take the sample yourself. If the sample is non-friable, such as floor tile, or window putty, do you feel well protected to take the sample yourself? Do you feel asbestos fibers will be released. The section Should I Take a Sample Myself? answer these questions and help you make a decision. Under these circumstances, it may be better to Using Our Inspector to Sample

How much will it cost for a sample to be tested in our lab? What if I need to hire a technician to take samples from my home? Will it cost more to have a through inspection done by an AHERA inspector? These questions are answered in Cost of Testing

Apparently, delivering a sample to our lab is always welcome, and it should constitute no problem as long as it's within your reach. If you live too far, or you don't feel to drive to our place, you can mail your samples to us, and the post office shouldn't have any problems mail a sample for you. Please refer to How to Submitt the Samples

It can be complicated and sometimes puzzling to read the report, if a homeowner is not very familiar with the asbestos terms. In the section How to Read the Report, we'll show you what the report means.

If asbestos is found at your home, be it an isolated spot, or a continuous area spreading several rooms, who should you call to remove the asbestos? Please read this section:How to Remove Asbestos?
